This looks like a pretty cool product, and the price is very reasonable.. but, of course, it remains to be seen what can be done with it.. :)

Re: Line 6 shows the ToneCore DSP Developer Kit for creating unique digital FX stompboxes
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 1:14 AMVery interesting.
Major downside is only one footswitch, and the "several seconds" of memory.
However, could be some wonderful glitchy stompboxes to be had. -

Re: Line 6 shows the ToneCore DSP Developer Kit for creating unique digital FX stompboxes
Sat, March 15, 2008 - 4:21 AMHey you guys (Andy and Chris, specifically)
How long would it take an intelligent novice (moi)
to be able to understand enough about DSP programming
to do something creative with such a Developers kit?
I'm realizing that my head is full of ideas for effects and it's quite hard to get people
to do all that really hard work to manifest them.
Years? Months? Weeks? Hours?
Are there simple books that can lay it out? Could buying one of these developers kits
and just diving in, intuitively, be an efficacious approach?
This thing just fascinated me watching it but there is a limit to how much time one has in one's life, of course.
Advice? Cautionary or otherwise? -

Re: Line 6 shows the ToneCore DSP Developer Kit for creating unique digital FX stompboxes
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 12:30 PMFirst, you'd have to learn programming.
So I expect it's a fairly long term project for a newbie.
If you're not worried about filters and pich shifting, then you don't actually have to learn DSP
to make glitchy delays and stuff.
...but you still need programming skills.
I thought the video was a bit misleading where it implied you could start with their example of a filter module and be able to futz about with it without ant knowledge and be able to come up with something interesting right away.
In reality, even if you already had programming skills you'd be spending your first day or so just to make the LED flash.
...and to understand filters at all there's some pretty intense math to go through.
So the answer is at least "weeks", probably "months", and possibly even "years".

next lifetime, perhaps!
glad you guys can do it so wonderfully. I admire the hell out of you for those mad skills. -

Re: Line 6 shows the ToneCore DSP Developer Kit for creating unique digital FX stompboxes
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 2:02 PMHave you tried using Reaktor or a similar program?
You'd have to come up with some really bizarre effect or synthesis method to not be able to pull it off in Reaktor or some of the other component level design programs.
Those programs, especially Reaktor, make a good introduction to this stuff to. I say especially Reaktor because the documnetation on it is really good to get you going. IF you take the time to read it (lots of people have an aversion to reading manuals of course, so it takes them months to learn what could be learned in a couple days)
